Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189 m) is a popular trekking peak in Nepal's Khumbu region, named by the 1953 British Everest expedition for its island-like appearance amid surrounding glaciers when viewed from Dingboche.

What is Island Peak and how high is it?

It is a 6,165-meter-high mountain in the Khumbu region of the Nepalese Himalayas. It has been officially called Imja-Tse since 1983, but the old name has taken root more firmly than the new one.

Where did the name Island Peak come from?

A British expedition in 1951 saw the mountain from the village of Dingboche and decided that it looked like a snow-covered island in the middle of the sea. That's how it was called - the island peak.

When was it first conquered?

In 1953, by the forces of the British expedition to Everest. Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was among the first to reach the top - the same one who climbed Everest.

Where do the ascents start and when is the best time to go?

The classic route starts from the village of Chukkhung, then the southeastern slope and the southwestern ridge. The best windows are April-May and October-November, outside of which the weather here is perfect.

How difficult is the climb?

The route combines snow, ice and rocks, closer to the top the ropes are stretched. The base camp is at 5,100 meters, so there is nothing to do without acclimatization - the mountain is popular, but not free.
