Knidos
FAQFrequently asked questions
What is Cnidus and where does it stand?
These are the ruins of an ancient Greek city at the tip of a peninsula in modern Turkey. It was founded by the Spartan Dorians, and it was once a wealthy shopping center - now tourists, not merchants, walk here.
What was Knidus famous for?
First of all, the statue of Aphrodite by Praxiteles is one of the most famous sculptures of antiquity. People came here specifically to see it, so we can say that the city held an ancient tourist record.
What can be seen here today?
Archaeologists excavated a round Doric temple of Aphrodite with a pedestal of the same legendary statue, and also found a marble statue of Demeter. The goddess of love herself, unfortunately, did not wait for the visitors.
Which famous people lived here?
Mathematician and astronomer Eudoxus of Knidsky, who kept his observatory in the city. There was also a famous medical school here - a place, as you can see, loved by both scientists and sculptors.
How was the city organized?
Part stood on the mainland, part on an island connected to the mainland by embankments, so Knidus had two harbors at once. Convenient for both ships and seascape.
