Bicycle tourism in Crimea

Wherever you plan to go by bicycle, be it southern coast, warm Sea of Azov, steeps of Tarhankut or cave towns of Belbek Valley, we advise to start from Simferopol. As all the roads lead to Rome, so the road to all the picturesque places of Crimea goes from Simferopol. Besides, in the capital of Crimea you can obtain everything necessary to travel, and in case of need to repair your iron horse. So, let's go…
Route: Simferopol-Alushta.
Southern coast of Crimea is very hard for cycling tourism due to significant drops of surface, low visability on mountainous surpentines and high population density.
The lengh of the road from Simferopol to Alushta (45 km), substantial height drops and considerable functioning capacity of the road show us, that this route is not for novices, but all the efforts will be paid in full. Your way will pass through one of the most picturesque roads of Crimea, you will go by real crimean forest, and sure will eveluate beauties of Chatyrdag mountain. You will go up the Angarskiy Pass (752 m. above sea level), admire numerous conglomerations of stones on slides of the ancient Demerji volcano . And below after a long descent you will meet sunny town of Alushta and, of course, the very Black Sea.
Southern coast, due to complex relief and indented coastline, is devided into a chain of varied routes. And every one of them will realy interest a bicycle rider.
Route: Simferopol-Rybachye.
South-eastern coast of Crimea (Large Alushta and Sudak region) - mountains here are somewhat further from the coasline, and wide vallies by the sea are combined by beaches. Because of this you can ride along the beach-line from Rock (Utes) sanatorium (westward from Large Alushta) and up to Sudak.
You can go up along the vallies of mountain rivers, for instance, onto the famous Ghost Valley. Karabi mountain pasture is the most abandoned place in Crimea (it is not far from Rybachye village) - on the territory less than 100 square km there's just a post of mountain rescuers. Upon these pastures there are numerous cavities: pits, caves, shafts.
You can go from Simferopol to Rybachye village, situated on south-eastern part of peninsula, having passed over Angarskiy Pass and turned from the main road at Luchistoye village, then you should pass by Demerji mountain toward Sudak and after covering a rather complex road full of rises and falls, you ride alont the beach-line towards Rybachye village.
Route: Simferopol - Mangup

In case you are interested in the ancent history of Crimea, which has become a native land for many nations, you can ride to cave towns. Mostly they are rather close to each other and are situated around the former Crimean khanate capital Bahchisaray.
High mountains, complex rocks and deep canyons together with sloping hills and attractive vallies create unique landscape. There is a complex of cave towns in this area.
It should be said that this route is less hard than the last one, for your way will mostly go along the valley and more or less hilly place. This route is preferable for novices because of its complexity, but it is very interesting.
Riding out of Simferopol toward Bahchisaray and Sebastopol, you should turn behind Bahchisaray to Ternovka village and hold to this direction. And after the first turning you will see cozy green vallies circled by low limestone mountains, looking like sheer fantastical walls. Soon the road, enveloping several low hills, will lead you into tiny Zalesnoye villate, after which the panorama of the ancient Mangup cave-town will come to light.
Route: Simferopol - Tarhankut

Tarhankut Cape, situated in north-western Crimea, is very interesting for a cycle tourist. Its limestone rocks reach up to 180 m. above sea level. Here you can meet a lot of gullies and ravines.
In order to get to this unique place you should go from Simferopol to Chernomorskoye town and then turn to Olenevka village. Having passed this village you find yourselves in steppe, throwing its rocks into the sea.
This route is quite distinctive because you won't meet any settlements along your way, nevertheless you will meet divers, who chose these places for wonderful underwater world and for diversity of its paints.
Territory of Tarhankut is not rich in beaches convenient to swim. They are mainly not far from rare settlements and are devided by kilometers of steep bank, covered with picturesque rocks and small bays. Special purity and coolness of sea water should be noted.
Besides, the eastern cost of Crimea attracts bicycle riders with its Kerch peninsula. Its hills resemble hills of Tarhankut. There are beautifull rocky ranges, pocket beaches, gulves and bays. In contrast to Tarhankut here you can quite often meet wide sand beaches.
The best place for bicycle tourism is Kazantip Cape, recently anounced a reserved territory. Its hilly basin is notable for a large number of calm flat slopes, and closer to the sea there are pilings of rocks and pocket beaches.

Golitsin Path in Novi Svet under Sudak is good too. Sportsmen will prefer motor-cross road near Alushta.
