The palace "Yasnaya polyana"

Yasnaya polyana
A comparatively small palace with two small towers buit in the English style is one of the oldest constructions of this kind on the Southern coast of the Crimea. It's a bit younger than Alupka Palace and resembles it in a way. Probably it's two-faced like Alupka Palace. It's northern front looks severe built in english neogothic style, and it's southern front is really southern with it's spacious terraces embroidered with roses.

Originally it belonged to Prince A.N. Golitsin and the estate (the palace with the park) was called 'Alexandria' in honour of Tsar Alexandr I. Later countess Panina became it's owner. It was she who invited a great russian writer L.N.Tolstoy to spend some time in the Crimea after he was seriously ill.

There is something kind and touching that this country estate on the southern coast with it's mansion surrounded by cypresses and palm-trees, embroidered with roses and ivy, has been called in our time 'Yasnaya polyana' in remembrance of Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. And it's wonderful that there is now a recreational center for children, Tolstoy would have been especially glad to know that.
