The palace of Alexander the Third

Upper Massandra
In Upper Massandra there is one of the best architectural monuments of the Southern Coast of Crimea - it is the Palace of emperor Alexander the Third. It is built by the slopes of the mountain ridge in the lonely place surrounded by the wood. The history of the Palace is curious. The Palace was started to being built in 1881 under the order of the governior's heir, grand duke S.M.Vorontsov, but he died a year later...

In 1889 Massandra estate of Vorontsovs together with the unfinished Palace was bought for the emperor Alexander the Third.

In 3 years the Palace building has been finished, but Alexander the Third also had no chance to live there: he died in 1894 in Maly Livadia Palace.

In Soviet time for many years this beautiful architectural monument was the closed object.

In tsar's Palace, that became the state cottage, the party and government leaders stopped there to rest.

Nowadays the palace is the object for excursions.
