The fifth bastion

Bastions formed a foundation of deeply echeloned defence of a fortress. There were seven bulwarks in all. Monuments and memorable signs were built in the location of all seven bastions. They formed a united system of memorials lasting along the defence line. The monuments were organically joined the whole memorial complex dedicated to Sevastopol defence in 1854-1855. The basis of the memorial complex of the Fifth bastion form monuments - the memoral cemetery of Communards; the chief path leds to the monument of lieutenant P.Shmidt and the headers of uprising in November, 1905, so called ochakovtsi - S.Chastnik, N.Antonenko and A.Gladkov. In the necropolis there is a great number of graves of the heroes who had been killed during the defence of the town in 1941-1942. Here is situated the common grave of sea-men of battleship "Novorossiysk" which had sinked in 1955 becouse of the explosion. Admiral F.S.Oktiabrski who commanded the Black Sea Fleet during the World War II is also buried here.
