Angarskiy Pass (Angar-Bogaz)

Angarskiy Pass (Angar-Bogaz) is a saddle between mountain ranges of the Main Range of Crimean mountains: Chatyrdag on west and Demerji on east. The height is 752 m. above the sea level. The Pass got its name from Angara River which is one of the tributories of Salgir River. Angar-Bogaz is the lowest point of the watershed between the basins of this river and Demerji River, flowing into the Black Sea.
The Pass consists of the layer of so called Tavria series - flat argellites, aleurolites, sandstones.
During the early Middle Age only a narrow path connected Salgir Valley with the coast. It passed eastward from the contemporary road and high in the mountains. A long period of time passed by before this path turned into a wheel road with a little difference from the last one. Centuries went by so the look of the road was changing: from the post road lying on cross-country territory it turned into the up-to-date road.
During its construction a great volume of works was done: more than 5 cubic meters of ground were moved, supporting walls were set up in many places, bridges were built, up to 300 abrupt turns were straightened… As a result the road-bed was widened twice.
On November 7, 1959 the first trollybus road through the mountainous road. Nowadays trollybuses carry up to 5 million passengers per year from the Southern Coast and back to Simferopol.
Skiing in Crimea has become everyday occurrence though not so long ago a tourist with skis on the streets of Crimean towns would give rise to smiles. It appears that to meet winter you don't have to hurry up to Carpathians: snow on the Pass lies for two-three months.
Many tourist paths go from the Pass. From Angarskiy Pass you can go to east to Demerji top and further onto Dolgorukovskaya Pasture and Karabi plateau. You can reach Yew-tree Canyon if you go along the eastern slope of Chatyrdag, and then throught the lower plateua to Krasnolesye. These trips are interesting during any period of the year.
The route along the southern slope of Chatyrdag to its top Eklizi-Burun and Angar-Burun is quite popular. In order to make this ascent you should go from the tourist center past the control and saving station and come towards the weather station. There is a crotch behind it with a pointer: an arrow to the left - to Kutuzov Lake, to the right - to Yew-tree Canyon.
The path goes deep into the forest, overpasses rises, goes through a wide opening, leaving on the right side a path to Beach Meadow. The forest after the opening becomes thicker and the trees are higher. Finally the road crosses a stream and leads to a vast meadow with Kutuzov Lake. In winter this lake is ice-bound and covered with snow so it is very hard to sea its flat bowl. But in spring the lake spreads over and turns into a rather big reservoir. Tourists set up tents on the banks of the lake. At the end of summer and during fall the lake looks like a small pond at the bottom of the basin. You can climb up to the Beech Meadow from the lake. The path with the pointer set up right after the lake, goes there.
On of the most convenient routes to the peaks of Chatyrdag starts slightly higher than Kutuzov Lake near a spring. All the paths like a fan go to this spring. Take some water here: there is no water at the upper plateau. A calm ascent takes no more than two hours. All the paths here are footworn and well seen on green meadows and under the trees.
Having got onto the plateau you will immediatly feel coolness - it's the altitude. A stone rock is piled upon the edge of the mountain. Izobilnoye village at the distance is seen from here to the south. To the right you can see a river with green gardens on the banks. The ascent finishes behind the second rock. Here you are - upon the upper plateau of Chatyrdag.
From the rocks you'd better follow not a visible path leading onto Eklizi-Burun, but turn to Angar-Burun. There is no more than a km and a half to it. It is not so distinct on the background of the plateau as Eklizi-Burun; possibli this is why Angar-Burun is not so popular with tourists, though there is a very picturesque view onto Angar valley, Angarskiy Pass, Demerji Mountain.
If you go from Kutuzov Lake to the west along the southern slope of Chatyrdag, after several kilometers of the forest path you enter a clearing with Saurgan spring. It is possible to go onto the upper plateau.
