Kuchuk-Koy landslide |
| In the western part of the South coast you can rather often meet lime rocks and blocks which are piling up chaotically and large parts of the slope which were moved from their primary places because of the land slides. The famous Kuchuk-Koy landslide and stone flow near the village Opolznevoye prove the grandiosity of the phenomenon of this kind. The huge pile of Upper-jurassic limestone blocks has formed in the result of the large landslide, which has happened at the end of XVII century and was described by the famous naturalist P.S.Pallas. "Crumbling at Kuchuk-Koy has happened on February, 10, 1786, when the surface of the ground began to give cracks and gaps, just that day a river on which two small mills were standing disappeared among these cracks. During next days the formation of cracks continued becoming more and more significant; frightened inhabitants of the nearest village left their houses with all their cattle and belongings and went away. Then the whole territory...starting with a wall-like ledge of the mountain to the very sea...around midnight suddenly dropped off, prodicing great crash and crack, and it continued to drop off till February, 28, when it an awful abyss has formed, where only one big and two small crests of the most strong rocks survived standing and the whole stripe of the ground lying lower has moved into the sea and moved aside its coast at the distance of 50 - 80 sazhens... (i.e. 110 - 170 metres)." - the academician has written about this phenomenon. |
