Mountain Ay-Nikola

It is a monument of nature (1969), where interesting sights are concentrated. The path, leading to the mountaintop, begins not far from the old columned arbour, nestling at the foot of the rock. Having a rest in Crimea in the 50's outstanding scientist, academician I.V.Kurtchatov ascended there more than once. Now it is called after him. The memorable board with the bas-relief and the scientists' words is fastened to the rock: "Mountain walks are inspiration for a creative work, which I always experienced, ascending to Ay-Nikola top". At the very beginning of the path one can come across evergreen bushes of a rare plants.
At the end of the summer bunches of small scarlet berries decorate thorny slanting branches. Farther the path goes through the thick mixed forest, where maple, guelder rose, evergreen shrubs of butcher's boom and jasmine grow together with Crimean pine-tree, downy and rock oak-tree and cornelian cherry. On the upper mountain storey the beauty of relic plants - tall juniper and small-fruited strawberry-tree - complement magnificence of the pine-tree forest. Some trunks are more than 50-80 sm in diameter. Undoubtedly, the age of these trees reaches hundred of years. On the western "shoulder" of Ay-Nikola, on the height of 300m, in a small romantic place, shielded by the rock from the south and by steep mountainside with ancient masonry from the north, grows one of the oldest on the peninsula strawberry-tree. Ten large and small branches, each of which looks like an independent tree, branch off the thickset trunk, 4 m in girth. This tree is not less than a thousand years old, but it is developing and bearing fruits well.
