You’re never too far away from a lit cigarette in Ukraine, and in some bars and clubs the term second-hand smoke just doesn’t seem strong enough. On the other hand, smokers will enjoy the ridiculously cheap selection of cigarettes hawked by every corner babushka and kiosk. Just recently Ukraine outlawed smoking in most public places and the workplace, except in specially designated areas. It is the responsibility of each company to provide a designated area for all smoking patrons or personnel. These special places can not exceed 50% of the total allotted area of the business. Since this law is relatively new in Ukraine, not every business has begun to enforce it. |

Beskyd ski area is located at the village of Verkhniy Studenyy off the Kiev-Uzhhorod train line. However, access is a bit difficult because the trains no longer stop at Beskyd station. You need to get off at the next stop (Skotarske), walk down to the elektrichka ("electric train") stop on the same line and get on the elektrichka going in the opposite direction (approx. 20 min. after the Kiev-Uzhhorod train passes through) and this time get off at Beskyd. Here you have a one-hour walk over the hill to get to Verkhniy Studenyy. Most mornings horse-drawn sleds will be there to take visitors to the village. An easier way, perhaps, is to take a taxi to Verkhniy Studenyy village from Volovets. Taxi drivers will find you themselves at the train station. It's about a 20 km drive. |

Slavsko ski resort (sometimes called Slavske) is located 120 km from Lviv on the Kyiv-Uzhhorod railroad. Perhaps this fact alone has made it the most popular ski resort in Ukraine. You can get on the train in Kyiv, get off the train the next morning at Slavsko station and be on the slopes by 10:00 a.m. No other ski resort is so easily accessible from so many places. In addition, Slavsko has a large variety of mountains and ski slopes and has a large tourist community. There's always lots to do. Slavsko is accessible by train and elektrichka from Lviv, Kiev, and Kharkov, and by minibus from Lviv. |

Podobovets is located 11 km to the south of the Volovets train station on the Kiev-Uzhhorod train line. Take a taxi to Podobovets and then a horse-drawn sled to the base of the mountain another 2 km further. This village is poor and undeveloped, but lodgings are available every in peoples' homes with minimal conveniences. The single tow lift up the mountain is 1000 m long, with a 230 m elevation rise up to about 1050 m. The top third of the mountain is rather difficult — quite steep and with moguls that can be large (the slope is ungroomed). The middle third is almost flat, and the bottom third has a medium grade. Lower-intermediate skiers get off the tow halfway up to avoid hurting themselves on the top part. There is also a wide, gradual hill off to the side of the mountain that beginners practice on (but with no lift). |

Про этот курорт незаслужено забыли. Лет десять назад, здесь сезон длился круглый год. Зимой, массовые заезды фанатов горнолыжного спорта (непосредственно в поселке имеется два горнолыжных подъемника), весной и летом, жаждущие вдохнуть свежего, кристально чистого воздуха, попить целебной, дающей здоровья воды, а осенью в этот край съезжались любители "тихой охоты". О том, какое колличество грибов и ягод дарит местная природа, трудно рассказать словами. Местные жители только белый гриб и называют грибом, а остальное, это не грибы. Впрочем правильней приехать и увидеть это все своими глазами.

Oryavchik is located 28 km from Skole (Lviv oblast), which is on the Kiev-Uzhhorod train route. It is just 4 km from Tysovets. Oryavchik — a young and expanding ski resort — can be reached by taxi from the Skole train station for approximately 60-80 UAH per car. We are not aware of any buses that go there. The slope has a base elevation of 850 m above sea level and a maximum elevation of over 1050 m. There is a tow lift all the way up the mountain and several runs down (see picture below). Skiing is intermediate, with a gradual slope at the bottom that is perfect for beginners. |

8 августа 1898 года, то есть 105 назад, в Киеве, на Новом строении состоялась торжественная закладка костела. Двумя годами ранее группа киевских католиков обратилась к губернатору с просьбой исходатайствовать разрешение на постройку нового римско-католического костела во имя святого Николая. Затея эта была выигрышной, поскольку в письме-прошении прямо указывалось, что костел должен возводиться "в память пребывания в Киеве Их Императорских Величеств". Разрешение было получено, но долгое время город не мог отвести под застройку бесплатный участок земли, да еще и в подходящем для большого по объему и доминантного сооружения.
